One of the problems many denture dentists face with dentures is that the procedure they learned is unscientific and therefore prone to error. And, when errors occur, dentists don’t have a good procedure to track down the errors scientifically. Instead, they keep following the same procedure, not knowing why it isn’t working.

A great example of this came up in Ireland recently, where a dentist was censured for a number of lapses in care, including a 5-hour session in which he kept trying to insert ill-fitting dentures into a patient’s mouth, causing bleeding and pain.

Should Have Known It Wouldn’t Fit

The Dental Council found Dr. Liam O’Droma guilty of professional misconduct for a number of recordkeeping and pharmaceutical lapses, as well as the denture fitting problem.

In the denture case, a patient went to Dr. O’Droma for a set of implant dentures. The dental implants were placed at an angle that wouldn’t allow them to attach properly to the denture.

However, the dentist tried to make them fit anyway. These efforts caused considerable denture pain.

The patient told the inquiry that the dentist made multiple attempts to fit the denture over a period of five and a half hours. The denture never did fit, leaving the patient’s mouth bruised, cut, and very sore. The patient was told to come back the next day for treatment, but, having lost his confidence in this dentist, he decided to seek treatment elsewhere.

The dentist disputes that the fitting took the full five and a half hours. The Dental Council didn’t rule on the length of the session, however, it did state that the dentist “persisted in treatment without seeking appropriate assistance.”

As a result of the reprimand, the dentist is now required to undergo significant restrictions on his dental practice. This includes new recordkeeping and prescription handling training, as well as regular inspections to make sure the dentist is following proper procedures.

The dentist also has to be mentored for two years in the areas of prosthodontics and implant dentistry, as well as taking additional courses in the subject area.

A Scientific Approach to Denture Fitting

One of the essential elements of the Denture Fountain of Youth® is that it takes a scientific approach to denture fitting. Dentists are taught how to properly design dentures to ensure they fit in your mouth as well as making sure they fit with dental implants, your jaw muscles, and more. They are also taught how to identify fitting problems so they can pursue more productive approaches to solving them, rather than simply trying the same thing over and over again to try to make dentures fit where they just won’t.

A FOY® Dentures dentist is dedicated to your comfort, before, during, and after the fitting process. They want you to have the best fitting experience and enjoy the best results from your denture.
