If you’re like many denture wearers, you may think that denture irritation is inevitable with dentures, and it’s just a minor nuisance. The bad news is that denture irritation can actually turn into a serious problem. The good news is that you don’t have to accept denture irritation because there are more comfortable dentures available.
When Denture Irritation Gets Dangerous
Denture irritation is actually an injury caused by your dentures. Most of the time, this injury heals of its own accord, if the denture is fixed so it doesn’t cause further irritation. Other times, though, denture irritation can turn into a dangerous complication.
For example, denture irritation can cause osteoradionecrosis. Osteoradionecrosis is a complication of radiation therapy in which a person’s bone dies or doesn’t heal properly. This can be related to a loss of blood vessels in the bone or decreased numbers of cells that make bone (called osteoblasts) due to radiation. In response to an injury, such as denture irritation, your body may start losing lots of bone, resulting in jawbone deformity, or it may heal with fibrous tissue rather than bone, which can make your bone more vulnerable to injury.
Although osteoradionecrosis is only a risk for those who have undergone radiation therapy, related bone conditions can be sparked in people who have weakened immune systems or diminished healing ability, which are natural consequences of aging. This means that continuing to wear dentures that irritate your mouth can expose you to serious consequences.
