The loss of teeth and the bone material that once supported the face can lead to wrinkles! The skin and soft tissue develops folds around the mouth, contributing to an aged appearance. Fortunately, treatment with FOY® Dentures can dramatically reduce and even eliminate some of the most aging wrinkles in this area. A similar effect has been documented using implant dentures, showing the dramatic potential for rejuvenation.
What Wrinkles Develop after Tooth Loss
This small Italian study looked at many of the common perioral wrinkles and other signs of aging that develop around the mouth as a result of the loss of teeth and supporting bone. This includes:
- Upper and lower radial lip lines
- Marionette lines
- Corner of the mouth lines
- Labiomental crease
- Fullness of the lips
- Nasolabial folds
Radial lip lines are folds that radiate out from the lips. They are sometimes called “lipstick lines” because when lipstick is applied, it can flow along these lines, creating a visible defect. Marionette lines are lines that run from the cheeks down to the chin line, creating an effect like a marionette or old-fashioned nutcracker, whose mouth is a separate part from the rest of the face.
Corner of the mouth lines are like crow’s feet for the mouth. The labiomental crease is the line that can develop between the lips and the chin, and may be related to witch’s chin. Lip fullness is a sign of youth, but it can diminish as a result of tooth loss and bone resorption. Finally, nasolabial folds can occur as a result of the descent of cheek pads due to gravity or the rising of the chin as a result of tooth and bone loss. They’re often called parenthesis lines because they form a set of parentheses around your mouth.
Significant Improvement Related to Implant Dentures
To determine the level of improvement related to implant dentures, 31 subjects–average age of about 62–were photographed in the same position before and after implant denture treatment. Then a panel of blinded reviewers rated the wrinkles in both pictures. A statistical tool was used to compare the ranking of the wrinkles between the two pictures. The results showed improvement in most of the wrinkles, such as the upper and lower radial lip lines, lip fullness, marionette lines, nasolabial folds, and the corner of the mouth lines.
Dentures Designed for Rejuvenation
It’s worth noting that this study wasn’t designed to really gauge the degree of improvement, just show that there was improvement. However, it is a good study for demonstrating the principles of facial rejuvenation with dentures.
FOY® Dentures are designed to maximize this improvement by optimizing fit. Using the principles of neuromuscular dentistry, FOY® Dentures are designed to restore your face to its youthful proportions. This can provide facial rejuvenation that is like a nonsurgical facelift, and, in many cases, even better because there’s no need to cut and stretch your skin, which can alter your facial appearance. Add to this the fact that FOY® Dentures don’t look fake, and you’ll see that these dentures are the best way to rejuvenate facial appearance in many cases.
