Why You Shouldn’t Save Dentures for Special Occasions

Dentures are meant to be worn all day every day. They provide many benefits that can help you enjoy a better quality of life. Some people with uncomfortable dentures, though, think of them as something that can only be tolerated for special occasions–like a party dress or old suit you barely fit in–but there are many good reasons not to treat your dentures this way.

Dentures Won’t Fit When You Need Them

One of the biggest problems with treating your dentures this way is that you’ll put them in when you’re going out or having people over and they won’t fit anymore.

Once your teeth are lost, the bone that used to support your teeth is slowly removed by the body. This process can be accelerated if you aren’t wearing your dentures. Although poorly fitting dentures can also accelerate the bone loss, the best way to ensure your dentures fit properly is to wear them on a daily basis.

Dentures Will Stay Uncomfortable

Part of the trick of wearing dentures is becoming accustomed to them. It’s very hard to do that when you’re not wearing your dentures all the time. If your gums don’t experience the pressure from dentures on a daily basis, they’re more likely to be sore when you do put them in.

And that can make for a very uncomfortable evening out.

Dentures Help You Keep Active

Properly fitting dentures can help you have better balance and walk with less risk of falling. That’s because dentures help stabilize your core by holding your jaw in a proper position and allowing it to serve as an anchor for important muscles that stabilize your head and neck.

Without dentures, you’re at an increased risk for falls, and you may find it harder getting up and around.

Dentures Improve Your Food Options

People are at increased risk of malnutrition once you’ve lost your teeth. To help maintain a good range of food options, it’s important to wear your dentures every day. It’s true that traditional dentures don’t give you the same chewing force as natural teeth, but implant dentures can. And even traditional dentures are better for chewing than your gums.

Without Dentures, Your Face Collapses

Your teeth provide essential support for the lower third of your face. When they’re gone, dentures have to do the job. And although traditional dentures aren’t very good at this, they’re definitely better than no dentures.

If you’re not wearing your dentures on a daily basis, you’ll definitely develop a sunken face and mouth, including deep lines and wrinkles around the mouth, in the neck, and even up to the corners of your eyes. When you do put your dentures in, these lines will diminish, but if you don’t wear your dentures every day, the folds and lines will still be there, making you look older.

You Deserve to See Your Smile

You might think that you only need to wear your dentures when there’s someone special to smile at, but the truth is that there’s always someone special to smile at: you. Smiling improves your mood, boosts your self-esteem, and can help you feel younger. And feeling younger can actually make you younger.
